Courtney Macari, a freshman at Tahanto Regional Middle/High School interviewed Mr. Steve Pacheco regarding the Global Studies Program beginning the 2015-2016 school year and Ms. Diane Tucceri, Principal, about the STEM Advisory Board, established this past school year.
What is the mission of the Global Studies Program at Tahanto?
The mission of the Global Studies Program is to increase students' global understanding and perspective and to give students a better appreciation of culture and diversity beyond their own communities.
What will students have to do in order to be accepted into the Global Studies Program at Tahanto? When will the program be initiated here at Tahanto?
The program will begin during the 2015-2016 school year. All students are encouraged to apply. There is an application process and requirements regarding community service, travel and course of study.
Will there be any community service and/or travel encouraged in the program?
Absolutely! Students will be given guidance in service opportunities, participation on clubs like Amnesty International and the Global Citizenship Club. We understand that the travel portion will have a cost associated with them so we are developing a variety of opportunities that take in to account various financial commitments.
How did the Global Studies Program idea come about?
The Superintendent of Schools, Nadine Ekstrom, was interested in the idea of a global component to our curriculum. A Global Studies Committee was formed and researched area schools, spoke with EF Tours and discussed with the faculty what pathway a program like this may take at Tahanto.
As the advisor, what are you looking forward to in bringing the program to Tahanto?
I’m looking forward to giving the students an opportunity to open their minds and to break down borders and appreciate other cultures and to help students discover that they are more alike than different when it comes to culture.

What is the STEM Advisory Board?
The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Advisory Board is made up of administrators, parents, teachers, students and community members who are interested in building and improving the K-12 STEM program. Its mission is “to foster the development of science, technology, engineering and mathematics curriculum and resources within the school community in order to expand the knowledge base and application skills of all students in the Berlin-Boylston Public School System”.
Why is Tahanto focusing on improving their STEM programs?
The focus is clear in its vision, which is to “expose all students to developmentally appropriate intra curricular and extracurricular STEM experiences that leverage the expertise of the community, while developing an appreciation for and the impact of STEM in their lives”.
What did the STEM Advisory Board accomplish this year?
The STEM Advisory Board was successful in creating its mission and vision and the STEM Integration Plan. The Board also voted to form a collaborative partnership with the Science from Scientists program. This program brings real scientists into the classroom to work with teachers and the students throughout the school year.
