Senior’s Advice for Upcoming Freshman

            As the oldest members of the student body, the seniors possess a certain wisdom or knowledge as a result of their high school experiences. The top three pieces of advice, from least to most common, most seniors would give to freshman are simply and expectantly to set goals, make memories and always apply oneself to their academic.   Through a brief survey, the graduating class of 2015 has shared examples of moments they have undergone that have brought them to such sensible conclusions. These moments include building priorities, which range from exceling in a sport, earning an academic award, or achieving and maintaining an A in a difficult class. Some seniors suggested that goals might also apply to fields stretching beyond academics and athletics. The majority of those surveyed stressed the relevance behind “living in the moment with friends”.   Finally, all but a fraction of those seniors surveyed emphasized that motivation displayed during the first year of high school will act as a foundation for one’s behavior as a student and academic patterns in the years to come.

     Getting involved is also a common piece of advice.  This past year, Tahanto Regional Middle/High School offered numerous clubs and after school activities to its students, most of which were available for further information/registration on the school website. Seniors encouraged freshman to join these after school programs, as a portion of seniors have achieved admirable awards and long-lasting memories as a result of their registration (and dedication) to these activities. It is also recommended that high school students work extremely hard in their academics as underclassmen because “bad habits will form” otherwise, explained one 2015 graduate, and upperclassmen years self-simplify from previous academic success.

            Through the surveys, it is apparent that most seniors would agree that a rich high school experience cannot be driven strictly from accomplishments within the school, although in-school accomplishments are extremely relevant. These seniors believe that forming sincere connections with other students is an essential factor to a healthy high school career. One senior, when asked to recall his favorite memory from his high school experience, indicated that his field trip to Six Flags Great Adventure with his friends was his favorite memory. Another senior said that her favorite memory was the goals she was able to meet with her teammates through school sports.

            Role-modelesque senior, Olivia Porter, former captain of Tahanto’s Track and Field and Cross Country teams, concisely stated the most commonly given advice in the surveys, “Hard work pays off. No matter what anyone says, you will always be better off in the end”.
